Replacing brakes on '82 34v
Replacing brakes on '82 34v
Hey guys
On my drive down here to TX from MN, I learned that my brakes are not the best. I confirmed that 4/6 of the trailer brakes were in working order before leaving, but I really felt like I could have used another 2. The stock brakes on my truck (1994 ram 2500 cummins) are way undersized as well. I actually locked up the fronts trying to emergency stop for an accident in a construction zone, yeah, it doesn't have anti lock brakes.
This is the link that Paul shared in his thread about replacing the brakes in his 88 34':

I am hoping to confirm that these are the correct brakes for my trailer before ordering. I have the weird independent axles.
I will also be upgrading the brakes on my truck with Powerstop towing pads in the front, and larger wheel cylinders in the rear.
Any other suggestions for improving braking performance?

Those should be the same for your trailer..... they are for Dexter 5200lb and 7000lb axles (some of the axles on mine were determined to be 6000lb axles due to outer bearing differences, and these fit fine on those, too.)

Thanks
I just ordered. Do you happen to remember what size the axle nut is?

From my other thread that details the process:
“You will need a 1-1/2" socket for the hub castle nut.”

How are the shocks?

I may be misunderstanding things, but isn’t that the nut that the cotter pin goes through? I’ve always tightened the nut with channel locks to get everything set proper, and then backed it off and retightened by hand, followed by backing (loosening) the nut off again as needed to drop the cotter pin in place.

Here is the procedure Dexter Axle recommends for bearing adjustment on 6K-8K axles . It includes the pre-load torque spec as well as the hand-torque method.
The procedure is shown on page 57.

Thanks, Silverloaf. The method I was referring to that uses a cotter pin appears consistent with the procedure described on page 56.
