How hard to replace/find brakes

Post by zoomjay »

One more question and I promise to be done asking (for a week or so). How hard is it to find replacement brakes for these trailers... specifically something in the 26' range? I saw a write up somewhere about buying "replacement units" which indicated a pre-loaded brake plate. Not sure if that is possible anymore or not.

Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response.....

What year is your Avion?

Mine is 1987..... easy to get brake assemblies.

I am now looking at a 1970, 26' Avion Ultra. Looks interesting although towing a 5,000 lb rig with no brakes (currently they are dead) several hundred miles home with my 6,000 lb truck does not strike me as a good time!

Yes, I agree!!

I don’t have any useful input on that vintage’s brakes..... hopefully someone will chime in soon.

I know Chuck Cayo can answer your questions.....

Will you be towing on flat ground the entire way?

Doubt it will be flat ground the entire way. We live in Virginia which does have some hills and dales. I did speak to Chuck Cayo and he indicated that it is pretty easy to get parts - best to get new backing plates. Most brands (Dexter, etc) will work.

For this trailer (a 1970 26" he did not remember if they are 10" or 12" brakes though).

One question I did forget to ask was: do two or all four wheels have brakes? Does anybody out there know how many wheels have brakes?

My 30R has brakes on all four wheels, and as far as I know other trailers would be the same.

Our 1970 ultra has 410 inch brakes which I replaced with new backing plates loaded the cost was about $60 each wheel .It
Was very easy but needed to use torch , to loosen nuts .

Anita,
Where did you buy yours from? I am now seeing prices in the 100-110 range. Looks like you got a better deal. Thanks
