Identifying trailer model/date

Post by Magstress »

Hi all,

I'm a new owner of a vintage Avion which I've been unable to definitively date. My tag says S-20, a model/length combination that I haven't seen listed on the different info sites. Any ideas as to what model this actually is?

I'm thinking that it's pre 1962, based on the shine of the exterior skins in certain places that have been cleaned or were under vents, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Maggie

Hi, Maggie.

Do you happen to have the serial number for the trailer?

(Sorry... after I asked that, I noticed you attached a picture of the ID plate.... let me study that.....)

If I remember correctly, the first digit of the serial number indicates the year..... "1" would be 1961?

I am trying to find a reference for that.

I am thinking it is a 1962 model.... I cannot figure out the S-20 designation, but yours is only 5 numbers away from a reference on Dr. G's site:

Model Length Sugg. List Serial # Weight
Tourist 20 20' $3,585 1540 2,680

Maybe yours was a special order?

I hate to add to Chuck Cayo's phone calls, but I am confident that he would know for sure..... he knows everything!

Well I'm definitely feeling better about having trouble ID-ing this trailer!
Would S stand for something other than sportsman? Perhaps 'special'? The inside appears to be the tourist, front dinette, side gaucho facing the galley, rear full bath.

I have no paperwork or info, as it was a Craigslist find.

Thanks for your help, I'm just not sure what to put in my signature!

Maggie, I have a 1961 T-20 that I got from my father, he bought it in 1963 when it was 2 years old. I have a sales brochure that shows models and floor plans. You’d is definitely a Sportsman 20, which I believe was made at the factory and was offered. Don’t know anything about dealer upgrades? The man to ask is Chuck Cayo in Michigan. You can find his number on the internet under Cayo camping repair, I think. I don’t have time now, but when I can I will upload the sales brochure and the owners manual. From the production number, you should be able to figure your year. Definitely before 1963 if it will polish shiny. The floor plans were different fro the Tourist models. Hope that helps Dave

This is the only reference back to an S-20 I could find using my google ninja skills. It's referenced via the way back machine to a page having a 1961 Avion manual. Appears some Tourist models have an S in the model. The individual's serial number also matches up alongside yours.

"Courtesty of Lance Kaun, Brookfield, WI

Lance has a 1961 Avion Tourist S-20 #1553 and has the original Avion Owners Manual"

Worth noting some other pages mention serial numbers for the T-20 Tourist in 1962 having similar serial numbers... Curious what Chuck confirms for you.

Maggie, I was wrong about the Sportsman , it makes no reference to it in my sales brochure. I guess I read about it online while researching my 1961. I am attaching anyway, think everyone will enjoy. Also the front page from my owner manual. Did you figure yours out yet?
