I definitely second removing all the anodizing for better results but it might be worth a try to do some aggressive cut polishing since you will probably have to eventually anyway. I just finished two stages of polishing on my 57 26' and it was similarly rough before I started. A Renegade orange airway wheel on a DeWalt 9" buffer, two bars of brown tripoli and lots of elbow grease was required to remove the water stains, tarp abrasions, oxidation, etc.
I think I'll be leaving the tired anodizing and desert pinstripes on my 68.
