30 amp hook up

Post by Gary Potter »

I'm having a 30 amp hook up installed at my home. I'd prefer not having the connections (30 amp and surge protector) bunched; rather have them hang freely. What should I allow for as a minimum height for the 30 amp rv plug?

Hi, Gary. Haven't hear from you in awhile..... what have you been up to?

Would an outlet 3' off the ground be sufficient?

(Be sure your electrician fully understands that you want a 30A 110V outlet installed. I have heard horror stories of people ending up with 220V outlets, thus causing havoc with their RV.)

3' should be fine. No snow here. I'll remind the electrician - 30amp, 110v, single breaker. I did read some of the horror stories about electric. Even saw one with a 12" to 18" hole in the lower left rear of the trailer. As well as some pretty serious scorch marks.

Razorback is right. This is easy to wire by yourself, BTW, but in any case test your receptacle with a multimeter to make sure it's 120v and not 240v.

At established campgrounds I don't worry so much about the voltage (although it's not a bad idea to check, along with checking polarity), but more importantly before entering the camper I use a low voltage tester to make sure my trailer skin isn't hot due to a reverse polarity bootleg ground.

Oh my goodness, I can see I'm going to need a special shopping list for Amazon.

Just a couple things to buy... I went with the Klein NCVT-2 since it will also test down to 12v.

As far as a multimeter, I keep a cheap analog meter in the trailer. No batteries to fool with since it's analog.

Can anyone tell me why Walmart is getting a hold of my link in my previous post?

Anyway, this one includes a polarity tester too...
